The demand for specialized geriatric care came as changes in hospital and skilled nursing care created a niche for a more medical-model assisted living. The need for services for people affected by Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders began to grow at an unprecedented rate. Dr. John Hopkins of Portsmouth created a company in which local management and private ownership brought a level of attention to detail in great contrast to the corporate absentee ownership which was overtaking the field.

The mission of Bellamy and Watson Fields is to minimize the impact and slow the progression of degenerative dementia diseases (Alzheimer's and others) and other chronic conditions of aging. By doing so, the quality of the resident's life is enhanced, family bonds are prolonged and new relationships are formed. The therapeutic communities employ a bio-psycho-social approach popularized during the early 1980s when Dr. Hopkins was helping to develop New England's first geriatric psychiatry program in a community hospital.

ANATOMY OF AN OUTBREAK: THE SECOND YEAR The first positive test among Fields residents and staff for the virus was reported on 3/17/20.
No residents have tested positive at Bellamy since the initial outbreak ran its course.
This was always a loaded HR category for me and it usually applied to sending people home early in anticipation of big snowstorms.
Now it has new meaning as health care facilities and all industries and services redefine work roles.
As a chronic student I took every epidemiology course I could find between 1978 and 1984 at U. Pittsburgh.

Facilities
Report
Bellamy Fields and Watson Fields assisted living facilities look alike on the inside and out.
A thoughtfully planned out one level design allows our residents easy movement while the secure buildings allow access to all areas of the facilities, providing families with peace of mind.
Dr. Hopkins research on social networks at a VA hospital in the 80's led to his development of the Therapeutic Community approach to assisted living at Bellamy and Watson Fields.
While there are some single rooms at the facilities, most of the accommodations consist of semi-private rooms in which the interactions between roommates are powerful social forces to maintain cognitive stimulation and preserve emotional functioning during the course of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
